Disposing of Invasive Brush

How do you safely dispose of invasive yard waste? WAIT! Don’t move that brush! It's illegal in NH to transport viable, invasive plant material. That's true for you as well as professional landscapers. The exception is if it is bagged in trash bags, and disposed of as solid waste (trash).

Do NOT dispose of invasive plant matter in yard waste or municipal compost. If you want the plant matter to be composted, you need to ensure it is first COMPLETELY killed. For more detailed information and further options, visit:

3 ways to safely kill invasives before disposing of them:

  1. Dry it
Leave plant material somewhere not on exposed ground to dry out for at least a week, preferably longer. Your driveway is a great option. Once it is completely dry and no longer viable, you may dispose of it safely.
NOTE: seeds are still considered viable after drying!
  2. Solarize it
Gather plants in black trash bags and leave them in full sun for 3 weeks. These bags can then safely be disposed of in the trash.
  3. Burn it
First, check that it is safe to burn the plants you have (e.g. never burn poison ivy). If it is safe, then burning is a great way to completely kill and dispose of invasive plant brush.
